Guidance for our Researchers

Good Research Practice

Breakthrough encourages all its scientists to follow principles of good research practice and integrity while conducting their work. We fully endorse the Medical Research Council's guidelines entitled ‘Good Research Practice’, as well as their policy on scientific misconduct.

Data Sharing

As a member of the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI), Breakthrough Breast Cancer fully endorses the NCRI data sharing policy and requests that all grant holders endeavour to exchange and share data, where possible.

Breakthrough has contributed to the costs of the NCRI Informatics Initiative, which supports the development of data standards and promotes a culture of data sharing.

For further information about data sharing please visit the NCRI Informatics website or download the NCRI sharing policy.

Use of Animals in Medical Research

Funders' vision for Human Tissue Resources

The UK funders of experimental medicine agreed a common vision for their investment in human tissue resources.

"Funders aim to maximise the value of human tissue samples and resources while minimising duplication of effort. This requires better characterisation of tissue samples, asking for generic consent, and increased linkage to accurate clinical data. Sample collections must then be made more easily discoverable and accessible for use in high quality, ethical research."

This vision has been endorsed by the UKCRC Experimental Medicine Funders Group and by the Board of the National Cancer Research Institute, Breakthrough has committed to the vision and the principles that support it.
