These project grants provide:
• Up to three years’ funding of between £50-100,000 per annum
• An opportunity to capitalise on research funded at the Breakthrough Research Centre and new Breakthrough Research Units
• A mechanism to support collaborative projects between Breakthrough and non-Breakthrough funded scientists within the UK and internationally
• Networking opportunities at the Breakthrough Annual Workshop to share expertise and develop collaborations.
Who should apply?
Applicants must be team leaders who have been supported by a Breakthrough Programme Grant for at least six months and who expect to be supported for the duration of the project grant. Post-doctoral scientists (typically with at least three years’ experience), and staff scientists, are eligible to apply as a co-applicant with a Breakthrough Team Leader. Funding can be used to support collaborative work with non-Breakthrough funded scientists within the UK and internationally. However, the award will only support staff research costs within the UK.
How to apply
The first stage of the process is the completion of the preliminary application form. Short-listed applicants will be invited to submit a full application for independent expert peer review. The Breakthrough Intramural Research Committee (BIRC) will make funding recommendations to Breakthrough’s Science Committee. The Science Committee will make the final decision on funding having carefully considered the recommendations of the BCRC together with the funds available and Breakthrough’s strategic priorities.
The deadline for preliminary applications has now closed.
Deadlines for future rounds of the Breakthrough Intramural Project Grants Funding Stream will be announced on this website.
