Breakthrough Generations Study

The world’s largest and most comprehensive cohort study investigating the causes of breast cancer.

Led by: Professor Alan Ashworth and Professor Anthony Swerdlow

This study is investigating environmental, behavioural, hormonal and genetic causes of breast cancer, as well as the causes of other cancers and diseases. The cohort study will include 100,000 women in the UK aged 18 years and older.

Supported by Breakthrough Breast Cancer and The Institute of Cancer Research, participants will fill out a detailed questionnaire and provide a blood sample every five years. The study will run for the next 40 to 50 years.

The wealth of long-term information collected by the Breakthrough Generations Study will provide critical information for studying breast cancer aetiology. It will also facilitate both case-control and larger prospective investigations into the genetic, hormonal and environmental risk factors for breast cancer.
