“What makes this team leader position special, is its location in the Breakthrough Research Centre. Currently, it is one of the best places in the country, possibly even Europe, for the translation of basic science into the clinic, which is the ultimate focus of my research.”

Biography

Dr Matthew Smalley carried out his PhD research on mouse mammary gland cell biology under the supervision of Mike O’Hare at the Institute of Cancer Research, London. He spent five years as a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Trevor Dale at the Institute of Cancer Research working on mammary stem cells and the role of Wnt signalling in mammary gland development. He then spent one year with Anton Berns and Jos Jonkers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, supported by an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship, developing breast cancer model systems using conditional knockout technology and novel imaging approaches. Dr Smalley was appointed a Team Leader at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Centre, London in January 2006.
